The user raises their Tamagotchi with Pompompurin's help. Depending on the level of care, games played, and foods fed the Tamagotchi can evolve and wear a costume of Pompompurin.

Pompompurin is a golden retriever whose trademark is the brown beret he wears on his head. He enjoys drinking milk and his favorite food is caramel pudding. He is known as a laidback individual that spends his free time sleeping and hanging out with his friends. Pompompurin's friends include a hamster named Muffin, a mouse named Scone, and a squirrel named Bagel.

Since his debut in 1996, Pompompurin has become one of Sanrio's most popular characters, having been ranked highly in the company's annual character ranking contest and even going as far to winning some editions, most recently in 2025.
